In short: For decades, O. Rajagopal was the face of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Kerala, consistently building his party's presence through repeated electoral losses. His persistence eventually culminated in a historic victory in 2016, marking the first time the BJP secured a seat in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

Born in 1929 in Palakkad, Olanchery Rajagopal began his legal career in 1956 before pivoting to politics under the influence of Deendayal Upadhyaya. His early career was defined by his work with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, where he served in leadership roles until the party merged into the Janata Party following the Indian Emergency. During this period, he was imprisoned in Viyyur Central Prison alongside V. Velankutty.

When the Bharatiya Janata Party was established in 1980, Rajagopal became a central figure in its Kerala operations. His political journey was marked by a series of challenging electoral contests. Between 1989 and 2014, he ran for the Lok Sabha multiple times, including several attempts in the Thiruvananthapuram constituency. While he often finished behind established candidates from the Indian National Congress or the Communist Party of India, his vote share consistently trended upward, signaling a growing influence for his party in a state where it had previously struggled to gain a foothold.

The turning point arrived in 2016. After years of narrow defeats and significant vote-share growth—most notably in the 2012 Neyyattinkara by-election where he helped increase the party's tally from roughly 6,700 to over 30,500 votes—Rajagopal contested the Nemom assembly seat. At the age of 87, he defeated the incumbent legislator, V. Sivankutty, by a margin of 8,671 votes. This victory secured his place as the first BJP member to enter the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Beyond his legislative work, he served as a two-time Rajya Sabha member from 1992 to 2004 and held various Union ministerial portfolios, including Railways and Defence. In 2024, he was honored with the Padma Bhushan for his contributions to public life.
