From Ajax Academy to Manchester United, the versatile career of Noussair Mazraoui
In short: Born in the Netherlands to Moroccan parents, Noussair Mazraoui has become a cornerstone of modern football tactics. Known for his adaptability across the defensive line and midfield, the Manchester United defender has navigated high-stakes club tenures and historic international milestones, including a controversial path to an Africa Cup of Nations title.
Noussair Mazraoui began his footballing journey at the Ajax Youth Academy, eventually making his professional debut for Jong Ajax in 2016. His breakthrough season in 2018 saw him emerge as a key talent, scoring crucial Champions League goals and helping Ajax secure a domestic double. After 137 appearances for the Dutch club, he moved to Bayern Munich in 2022, where he won the Bundesliga in his debut season. By August 2024, he had signed a four-year deal with Manchester United, where he has since been deployed in various roles, including right-back, centre-back, and wing-back, under managers Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.
Internationally, Mazraoui chose to represent Morocco, the nation of his parents. His tenure has been marked by both triumph and friction. He played a pivotal role in Morocco’s historic 2022 World Cup campaign, where they became the first African side to reach the semi-finals. His international career also saw a period of estrangement from former coach Vahid Halilhodžić, though he returned under Walid Regragui. In 2025, Mazraoui was part of the squad that hosted the Africa Cup of Nations. While they initially lost the final to Senegal, the result was overturned in March 2026 after Senegal walked off the pitch in protest, awarding Morocco the championship.
Mazraoui’s career has not been without off-pitch challenges. In 2023, he faced public scrutiny for social media posts regarding the Gaza war, leading to discussions with Bayern Munich management and representatives of the Jewish Community of Munich. Additionally, he has navigated health concerns, including pericardium inflammation following COVID-19 and heart palpitations in 2024. Despite these hurdles, his tactical flexibility—ranging from defensive duties to attacking midfield roles—remains his defining professional trait, cementing his status as a versatile asset in the Premier League.
