In short: After witnessing Earth implode in 2007, five survivors are sent back five years by an inorganic entity called the Seeker. They must navigate the complexities of their past lives while hunting for the truth behind a mysterious cataclysm, all while grappling with the unintended consequences of their foreknowledge.

Odyssey 5, a Canadian science fiction series produced in Toronto, follows a crew of six—four astronauts, a scientist, and a reporter—who encounter a catastrophic event during a 2007 space shuttle flight. When the planet dissolves into a fiery ball, an entity known as the Seeker intervenes. Having observed 50 other worlds suffer the same fate, the Seeker offers the five survivors a chance to alter history by sending their consciousnesses back to 2002. This mission is centered on a cryptic codeword: Leviathan.

The narrative explores the friction between the team members, who are not friends and often clash over their conflicting priorities. As they attempt to prevent the disaster, they must manage their personal histories. Reporter Sarah Forbes struggles to save her son from a terminal illness, while astronaut Angela Perry confronts her father’s political corruption. Meanwhile, Nobel Prize-winning geneticist Kurt Mendel, skeptical that history can be changed, adopts a hedonistic lifestyle. The group’s efforts are complicated by the fact that their interventions often produce negative, unforeseen outcomes, such as when a known football result leads to a team loss due to the pressure of expectation.

The series, created by Manny Coto, delves into themes of artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and neuroimaging. The primary antagonists are the Sentients, a race of disembodied AIs that use humanoid robots called Synthetics to study humanity. The show’s premise suggests that the very act of trying to change the future might accelerate the catastrophe they hope to avoid. Despite Coto’s expressed interest in reviving the project, the series concluded after its 19-episode run, with the creator passing away on July 9, 2023.
