How OG Anunoby became the cornerstone of a historic New York Knicks championship run
In short: Born in London and raised in Missouri, OG Anunoby has evolved from a defensive specialist into a pivotal NBA champion. His journey, marked by a record-breaking playoff performance and a transformative trade to New York, highlights the unique physical and tactical versatility required to dominate the modern professional basketball landscape.
Ogugua Anunoby Jr. was born in Harlesden, London, in 1997 to Nigerian parents, eventually moving to Jefferson City, Missouri, at age four. After a standout high school career and a stint at Indiana University, he was drafted by the Toronto Raptors in 2017. Though he missed the team's 2019 championship run due to an emergency appendectomy, he became the first British player to earn an NBA title. His reputation as an elite defender grew steadily, culminating in him leading the league in steals during the 2022–23 season.
The trajectory of his career shifted significantly following a December 2023 trade to the New York Knicks. Anunoby immediately made an impact, setting an NBA record with a plus-minus of +170 over his first ten games with the franchise. His defensive utility is rooted in a 6' 7" frame paired with a 7' 2" wingspan, allowing him to guard any position on the court. This defensive intelligence, combined with his reliable three-point shooting, makes him a prototypical '3-and-D' forward capable of thriving alongside ball-dominant teammates like Jalen Brunson.
Anunoby's 2025–26 season solidified his legacy, as he helped the Knicks secure their first championship in 53 years. During the Finals against the San Antonio Spurs, he delivered a standout performance, including a game-winning tip-in during a historic 29-point comeback in Game 4. His postseason efficiency was statistically unprecedented; he achieved the highest effective field goal percentage in league history for any player attempting at least 150 shots in a single playoff run. Beyond his on-court achievements, Anunoby remains focused on inspiring the next generation of British basketball players.
