In short: In Mark Anthony Green’s directorial debut, a legendary musician invites guests to a Utah compound for a twisted experiment. What begins as a high-profile listening party for a long-awaited album descends into a calculated massacre designed to create a global bestseller.

Released by A24 in March 2025, the thriller *Opus* follows journalist Ariel Ecton as she attends a private event hosted by pop icon Alfred Moretti. Moretti, played by John Malkovich, has not released an album in 30 years, and his invitation to a select group of media figures—including influencers, paparazzi, and talk show hosts—promises an exclusive look at his return. However, the retreat to his Utah compound quickly reveals a sinister underlying structure: the presence of the Levelists, a group of cultists in denim uniforms who monitor the guests' every move.

The film’s tension escalates through a series of unsettling rituals, from forced makeovers to the disappearance of guests like radio host Bill Lotto. As the violence intensifies, resulting in the deaths of several attendees, the narrative reveals a chillingly pragmatic motive. Moretti did not merely commit a crime; he orchestrated a massacre specifically to ensure Ariel would survive to document the horror. The entire event was a marketing strategy intended to use Ariel’s subsequent bestselling book to proselytize the Levelist ideology to the masses.

Despite the high-concept premise, the film faced a difficult theatrical run. While it earned $2.2 million at the box office, critics were largely critical, with Rotten Tomatoes noting a 39% positive rating and suggesting the film was 'too conceptually confused.' Nevertheless, the film's final twist—implying Ariel has herself become part of the very movement she sought to expose—remains its most haunting element.
