How a handshake with Walt Disney turned a college mascot into an icon
In short: The University of Oregon athletic teams were originally known as the Webfoots, a name rooted in Revolutionary War history. By the 1940s, however, a unique agreement between athletic director Leo Harris and Walt Disney allowed the school to adopt the image of Donald Duck, forever changing the university's identity.
The transition from Webfoots to Ducks was a gradual evolution. While the Webfoots name was officially adopted following a 1926 contest and reaffirmed by a 1932 student vote, the association with ducks began in the 1920s. Even after the Donald Duck image became the official mascot, both names persisted in usage well into the 1970s. A 1978 attempt to replace the mascot with a new cartoon design was rejected by students, leading the University Archivist to officially cement the Duck as the school's representative.
Beyond its mascot, the University of Oregon has cultivated a reputation as Track Town, USA, a legacy built by legendary coaches like Bill Hayward and Bill Bowerman. Bowerman, who coached from 1949 to 1973, not only led the program to numerous NCAA titles and mentored icons like Steve Prefontaine but also co-founded Nike. This culture of excellence extends across various sports, with the university boasting 35 NCAA team national championships across disciplines including cross country and track and field.
The university's athletic success is supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure, much of which was funded by prominent boosters such as Phil Knight, Ed Moshofsky, and Patrick Kilkenny. These facilities, including Autzen Stadium and the Moshofsky Center, support a diverse range of programs. From the football team's first Rose Bowl victory in 1917 to the women's basketball team's historic 2019 win over Team USA, the Ducks have maintained a consistent presence in national collegiate competition, navigating shifts in conference alignments and evolving from their early days as a small regional program.
