The curious origin of Pablo Cruise, a band named after a fictional persona
In short: Formed in San Francisco in 1973, Pablo Cruise became a staple of the pop-rock scene with hits like Whatcha Gonna Do. Despite their success, the name Pablo Cruise was not a person, but a concept representing an honest, down-to-earth individual with a fun-loving, easygoing attitude toward life.
The band emerged from the San Francisco music scene, pulling talent from groups like Stoneground and It's a Beautiful Day. Founding members David Jenkins, Cory Lerios, Steve Price, and Bud Cockrell initially faced confusion from fans who assumed Pablo Cruise was a specific band member. When pressed, the quartet would jokingly point to the guy in the middle, though the name was actually a symbolic invention. The moniker was meant to capture an ideal personality: Pablo represented the grounded, authentic self, while Cruise embodied a relaxed approach to existence. Some accounts, including one from radio personality Casey Kasem, suggested the name originated from a drifter, though the band maintained their own philosophical definition.
Their career trajectory saw significant shifts, moving from minor success with their self-titled 1975 debut to mainstream recognition by 1977. The album A Place in the Sun marked their breakthrough, peaking at No. 19 on the Billboard 200 and featuring the hit single Whatcha Gonna Do. The band's sound evolved over the next decade, transitioning from piano-driven rock to an '80s pop keyboard style with the 1983 album Out of Our Hands. Throughout this period, the group experienced frequent personnel changes, with various musicians cycling through the lineup as the band navigated shifting musical trends and the rise of new wave.
After splitting in 1986, the band saw several reunions and iterations. While original members pursued diverse paths—from television scoring for Baywatch to aerial photography and E-learning—the core group reconvened in various configurations over the decades. Despite the deaths of former members Bruce Day in 1999 and Bud Cockrell in 2010, the band has maintained a touring presence. By 2025, founding drummer Steve Price had rejoined the group, continuing a legacy that began over fifty years prior in a Palo Alto garage.
