In short: Born in Liverpool, Philip Barantini transitioned from a successful acting career to becoming a celebrated director known for his intense, continuous-shot storytelling. By drawing on his own past as a head chef and collaborating with Stephen Graham, he has redefined the technical boundaries of modern television and film production.

Philip Barantini, born on 13 July 1980, spent his early life in Huyton, Merseyside. Before his directorial breakthrough, he established himself as a working actor, appearing in notable projects such as the 2001 HBO series Band of Brothers, where he played Sergeant Wayne A. Sisk, and the 2003 film Ned Kelly. His acting background provided him with a unique perspective on set dynamics, which he refined by shadowing other directors while still pursuing roles in productions like The Responder and Chernobyl.

His transition to directing began with the 2019 short film Seconds Out, followed quickly by the original short Boiling Point. This project marked the beginning of a prolific creative partnership with actor Stephen Graham. Barantini’s feature-length adaptation of Boiling Point (2021), co-written with James Cummings, drew heavily from Barantini’s personal history working in professional kitchens. The film’s technical ambition—a single, continuous take—earned widespread acclaim, including 11 BIFA nominations and four BAFTA nominations in 2022. Graham described the experience as one of the most exhilarating of his career.

Barantini has continued to push the limits of the one-shot format. In 2025, he released the four-part miniseries Adolescence, which featured each episode filmed in one continuous take, again starring Stephen Graham. His directorial portfolio is diverse, spanning the 2022 thriller Accused, the ITV drama Malpractice, and the music video for Sam Fender’s 'Spit of You'. Beyond his directorial work, Barantini is a producer and co-creator, often working through his own company, It's All Made Up Productions. His future projects include directing the third installment of the Enola Holmes series for Netflix, signaling his continued influence in both independent and mainstream cinema.
