The pop standard that almost didn't make the album
In short: It was born from a dream and nearly left the cutting room floor. While Billy Joel's 1977 hit became a global phenomenon, its journey from a rejected studio track to a Grammy-winning masterpiece is a story of unexpected influences and studio disagreements.
Released in early November 1977 as part of the album The Stranger, "Just the Way You Are" was Billy Joel's first Gold single in the US. The song's melodic foundation arrived via a dream, but its lyrical identity was sparked by an external source: the final line of the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons track "Rag Doll." This connection would later influence Joel's writing for "Uptown Girl." Critics have noted that the track's light Latin rhythm and melody show a subtle influence from Stevie Wonder.
The song's inclusion on the final album mix remains a point of contention. Joel maintains that he only included the track at the urging of fellow musicians Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow, who were recording in the same building. However, producer Phil Ramone offered a more pragmatic perspective, suggesting the band simply lacked enough material to justify excluding it. The production itself utilized keyboard and background vocal tape loops to create an ethereal choir effect, reminiscent of 10cc's "I'm Not in Love." The track also features a notable saxophone solo by jazz musician Phil Woods, a performance that helped introduce his work to rock audiences. Additionally, the single version of the song was notably shortened by more than sixty seconds compared to the album version.
Despite its success—reaching No. 3 in the US and No. 19 in the UK, and topping the Billboard Easy Listening Chart throughout January 1978—the song's legacy is tied to Joel's personal life. Written for his first wife and manager, Elizabeth Weber, the song became difficult for Joel to perform following their 1982 divorce. During that era, drummer Liberty DeVitto would often parody the lyrics with the phrase, "She got the house. She got the car." The song's prestige is such that Paul McCartney has even admitted to feeling jealous of the composition. In 1989, Joel even performed a modified version of the track for a Sesame Street segment alongside Oscar the Grouch and Marlee Matlin.
