The $2 billion price tag for a new NHL home
In short: Expanding the National Hockey League is a high-stakes game of geography and greed. While cities across North America clamor for a seat at the table, the league faces a complex web of territorial disputes, revenue concerns, and a massive $2 billion entry fee that could redefine the sport's footprint.
The NHL currently operates with 32 active teams, split between 25 in the United States and 7 in Canada. While the league is not formally pursuing expansion as of June 2025, Commissioner Gary Bettman has signaled that any future expansion fee will likely reach $2 billion USD. This massive financial barrier sits atop a history of contentious growth, particularly regarding the league's presence in Canada. The tension over Canadian expansion dates back to the 1960s. In 1967, the rejection of Vancouver's bid for one of six new franchises sparked national outrage, with Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson calling the move an impingement on 'sacred principles.' This sentiment persisted through the 1970s, when a failed merger with the World Hockey Association led to a mass boycott of Molson products.
Even today, existing Canadian teams, notably the Montreal Canadiens, have historically expressed concerns that new franchises would dilute the television revenue shared among them. Despite these hurdles, data suggests a capacity for growth. A 2011 University of Toronto study concluded that Canada could support 12 teams—double the amount at the time. Statistical analysis by Nate Silver in 2013 supported this, suggesting Canada could host 11 or 12 teams because the average Canadian market contains significantly more hockey fans than the typical U.S. market. Potential hotspots include the Golden Horseshoe area of Southern Ontario, Quebec City, and even a second franchise for Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver.
