In short: Long before digital dashboards, one economist turned election forecasting into a precise science. By combining academic rigor with television journalism, Prannoy Roy transformed how millions of Indians understood their democracy, moving the nation from simple observation to sophisticated, data-driven psephology.

Prannoy Roy, born in 1949, is a multifaceted economist and journalist who played a pivotal role in modernizing Indian media. After earning a PhD in agricultural economics from the Delhi School of Economics in 1978, he began a career that would bridge the gap between academic data and public consumption. His early work was marked by a fascination with election results, leading him to produce his first forecast for the 1977 Indian general election through Mainstream magazine.

Roy is widely credited with pioneering opinion polling in India between 1980 and 1995. Through collaborations with political scientists like David Butler and economists like Ashok Lahiri, he helped mainstream the field of psephology—the statistical study of elections. His reputation for accuracy was solidified during the 1984 Indian general election, where his forecast correctly predicted an Indian National Congress victory with 400 seats.

Beyond the data, Roy was a central figure in the evolution of Indian broadcasting. He co-founded New Delhi Television (NDTV) in 1984, which initially produced successful international news programming for the public broadcaster Doordarshan. His work helped usher in an era of rapid growth in Indian television, following the 1976 separation of television from All India Radio. Despite facing various legal challenges and government pressures over the decades, Roy's influence on the Indian media landscape remains profound, from his early days as a news presenter to his 2024 launch of DeKoder, an AI-driven election analysis platform.
