In short: Beyond the glamour of La Liga lies a dense web of competition. The Segunda Federación operates as a massive, five-group engine of Spanish football, where promotion is hard-won and the rules for reserve teams add a unique layer of strategic complexity.

The Segunda Federación, managed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), serves as the fourth tier of the Spanish football league system. It sits below the Primera Federación and the two professional giants, La Liga and La Liga 2. The league's structure is notably large, comprising 90 clubs organized into five distinct groups of 18 teams each.

The path to the third tier is highly competitive. While the champions of each of the five groups earn automatic promotion to the Primera Federación, the opportunity extends further through a play-off system. From the remaining top four teams in each group, an additional five clubs secure their ascent. However, a specific regulatory hurdle exists for reserve sides: a reserve team can only move up if its senior counterpart competes in a division at least one level higher.

Conversely, the stakes for the bottom of the table are equally high. The five lowest-ranked teams in every group face relegation to the Tercera Federación. Additionally, a secondary battle occurs among the middle-tier clubs, where the four worst-performing 13th-placed teams must compete in relegation play-offs to decide which two will drop down.

Squad management within the division is also strictly regulated. Clubs are permitted a total of 22 players, but they must navigate specific age and contract constraints. Specifically, no more than 16 players may be older than 23, and the roster must include at least 10 players holding professional contracts.
