In short: In the complex architecture of Spanish football, the Tercera Federación is a league defined by constant movement. It has migrated through the ranks of the national pyramid, evolving from a top-tier contender to a regional powerhouse, reflecting the structural shifts of the sport's governing bodies.

The Tercera Federación currently serves as the fifth tier of the Spanish football league system. Its history is one of constant repositioning within the national hierarchy. Originally founded in 1929 as the third tier of the system, it saw its status downgraded twice: first falling to the fourth tier in 1977, and subsequently dropping to its current fifth-tier status in 2021.

The 2021 restructuring was a significant turning point. On May 6, 2020, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the creation of the Primera División RFEF, a new 40-team third division split into two groups. This move pushed the previous third and fourth divisions down one level. The former fourth tier, known as Tercera División, was rebranded as Tercera División RFEF before eventually being renamed Tercera Federación in July 2022.

Today, the league is organized into 18 regional groups that correspond to Spain's autonomous communities. Because of its massive scale, the region of Andalusia is split into East and West groups, with the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla assigned to the West and East groups, respectively. Each group is managed by a regional football federation.

The stakes for these clubs are high. At the end of each season, the top four teams in each group enter promotion play-offs for a chance to reach the Segunda Federación. Furthermore, the 18 group champions earn a spot in the following season's Copa del Rey. While reserve teams are ineligible for these honors, the remaining clubs compete in the Copa Federación alongside teams from the Segunda Federación.
