The non-organization that thrives on the edge of modern society
In short: Imagine a massive, spontaneous city with no leaders, no money, and no official membership. Since 1972, Rainbow Gatherings have attempted to build a utopian alternative to 'Babylon'—a community governed by consensus, shared labor, and a radical rejection of consumerism.
The Rainbow Family of Living Light began with a four-day event in Colorado in July 1972. Originally intended as a one-time occurrence, the movement grew into an annual tradition, with the first gathering attracting between 20,000 and 45,000 people. These gatherings are characterized by a total absence of formal hierarchy or paid organizers; instead, they rely on 'focalizers' and volunteers to manage the massive, temporary populations that can reach up to 30,000 people.
The community operates on a non-commercial ethos where using money is considered taboo. While a 'trading circle' or 'barteen lane' exists for luxuries like crystals or handcrafts, necessities are shared freely. This 'disorganization' even has its own linguistic markers, such as referring to mainstream, exploitative systems as 'Babylon.' To maintain order without police, the 'Shanti Sena' (peace army) handles conflict resolution, and the community uses a consensus-based 'Mini-manual' to establish practical guidelines.
However, the movement faces significant internal and external friction. Internally, the 'Drainbows'—those perceived as consuming resources without contributing labor—create a classic cooperation problem. Externally, the gatherings have faced criticism for the misappropriation of Native American traditions and environmental impacts on National Forest lands. In recent decades, rising crime rates and the presence of drug and alcohol use have complicated the group's original peaceful, utopian vision, leading to a decline in attendance at some regional events.
