How an Indonesian weightlifting prodigy rose to Olympic and World dominance
In short: Born into a family of elite lifters, Rahmat Erwin Abdullah has rapidly ascended the global stage. From his international debut in Bangkok to securing Olympic and World Championship gold, his journey reflects a powerful blend of genetic legacy and world-record-breaking strength in the 73 kg class.
Rahmat Erwin Abdullah's ascent in weightlifting is marked by a rapid transition through weight classes and international tiers. Competing in the 69 kg class, he entered international competition during the 2017 Youth World Weightlifting Championships in Bangkok. By the 2018 World Weightlifting Championships in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, he had moved to the 73 kg category, the class in which he has competed since.
His rise was punctuated by a series of significant victories. He claimed his initial international gold in 2019 at the Asian Junior Championships in Pyongyang, North Korea, totaling 326 kg (147 kg snatch and 179 kg clean and jerk) to beat Ko Myong-ho of North Korea. He followed this with a second gold at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines, defeating Vietnam's Phạm Tuấn Anh with a 322 kg total.
Abdullah's momentum continued into 2020, where he earned his third international gold at the Asian Junior Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, surpassing Iran's Mir Mostafa Javadi. His success culminated on the highest stage at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, where, despite competing in Group B, he secured an Olympic bronze medal. He has since established himself as a dominant force, winning consecutive World Weightlifting Championship gold medals in 2021 and 2022.
Beyond his individual accolades, Abdullah carries a significant sporting lineage. He is the only child of former weightlifters Erwin Abdullah and Ami Asun Budiono. His father, Erwin, was a silver medalist at the 2002 Asian Games, while his mother, Ami, won gold at the 1995 SEA Games.
