In short: Randy Quaid’s career has spanned over 90 films, from beloved comedic roles to intense historical dramas. Yet, behind the cinematic success lies a turbulent journey of legal battles, asylum seeking, and a permanent ban from one of the industry's most influential labor unions.

Born in Houston, Texas, in 1950, Randy Quaid rose to prominence in the 1970s. His breakout performance in Peter Bogdanovich's 'The Last Picture Show' led to critical acclaim, including an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nomination for his role in 'The Last Detail' in 1973. He became a versatile character actor, capable of playing everything from the jovial Cousin Eddie in the 'National Lampoon's Vacation' series to the historical figure of President Lyndon Johnson, a role for which he won a Golden Globe in 1987.

However, his professional trajectory was significantly disrupted by legal and disciplinary issues. In February 2008, the Actors' Equity Association, the union representing American stage actors, issued a life ban against Quaid and fined him over $81,000. The sanctions stemmed from a production of 'Lone Star Love' in Seattle. Quaid famously defended his actions by suggesting his performance was so convincing that producers mistook him for the Shakespearean character Falstaff.

The later years of Quaid's life were marked by intense legal struggles in both the United States and Canada. Following arrests in 2009 related to fraud allegations in Santa Barbara, Quaid and his wife, Evi, sought asylum in Canada in 2010, claiming they feared for their lives. After years of litigation regarding revoked passports and deportation orders, the couple eventually moved to Vermont. His later public life has been characterized by his vocal support for conspiracy theories regarding the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
