The UFC lightweight fighting for Austrian economics and Bitcoin
In short: Renato Moicano is more than a mixed martial artist. Since his professional debut in 2010, the Brazilian fighter has become a vocal libertarian activist, using his platform to promote Austrian economics and Bitcoin as a shield against financial instability, often citing his own tax burdens as the catalyst for his political awakening.
Renato Moicano, born May 21, 1989, has built a career that spans from the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu mats to the highest levels of the UFC lightweight division. After starting judo at age eight, he briefly pursued a law degree before dropping out after two years to focus on professional fighting. His nickname, which means 'mohawk' in Portuguese, was earned during his early training sessions. He began his professional journey in 2010. Before entering the UFC, he was the former interim Jungle Fight Featherweight Champion.
Beyond the octagon, Moicano has become a notable figure in libertarian circles. In 2024, his vocal support for economist Ludwig von Mises went viral, and his advocacy for Bitcoin was featured by Fox Business. He has expressed a commitment to core U.S. constitutional liberties, including the First Amendment, the right to private property, and the freedom to bear arms. During a 2024 victory speech in Paris, he criticized democracy and globalists, recommending Hans-Hermann Hoppe's book, 'Democracy: The God That Failed.'
In the cage, Moicano is a prolific finisher. He holds a tie for the third most rear-naked choke submissions in UFC history with seven. His career includes high-stakes moments such as a title challenge against Islam Makhachev in early 2025 and a 'Fight of the Night' bonus against Brian Ortega in 2017. He has since transitioned to training at the American Top Team in the United States. His competitive history includes a victory over Zubaira Tukhugov via split decision. He also secured a Performance of the Night award following a win against Cub Swanson.
