Before directing cult films, Richard Elfman built a career in the clothing retail business
In short: Long before his surrealist films and musical troupes gained a cult following, Richard Elfman took a detour into fashion. After leaving college, he opened clothing stores near two major California universities, setting the stage for a multifaceted career that would eventually span avant-garde theater, music, and independent horror filmmaking.
Richard Elfman's early life was marked by diverse pursuits, ranging from track athletics at Dorsey High School to amateur middleweight boxing. Before his transition into the performing arts, he established himself as an entrepreneur by opening clothing stores adjacent to the campuses of UC Santa Barbara and UC Berkeley. This retail venture preceded his move to Paris in the early 1970s, where he joined Jérôme Savary's Le Grand Magic Circus, a musical theater company that toured extensively across Europe.
Upon returning to Los Angeles in 1972, Elfman founded the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo. This performance art troupe, which he described as a commedia dell'arte ensemble, featured up to fifteen musicians playing thirty instruments. The group focused on recreating music from the 1920s through the 1940s alongside original avant-garde compositions by his brother, Danny Elfman. The troupe's theatrical aesthetic eventually informed Richard's first directing project, the 1982 cult film Forbidden Zone, which served as a black-and-white cinematic version of their stage show.
Elfman's creative output has remained eclectic throughout his life. Beyond his work in film—which includes directing titles like Shrunken Heads, Modern Vampires, and the 2024 musical horror film Bloody Bridget—he has served as editor-in-chief of Buzzine magazine and published his first novel, The Schlimazel of Sebreim, in 2023. Today, his legacy continues through the enduring cult status of Forbidden Zone, which frequently features live shadow cast performances, and his ongoing work in animation and literature. Whether through music, film, or writing, Elfman’s career reflects a consistent commitment to surrealist expression and independent production.
