Discovery of a new extinct human relative with a unique mix of traits
In short: Researchers exploring the Dinaledi Chamber in South Africa have identified a previously unknown species of extinct hominin named Homo naledi. This find, comprising at least 15 individuals, reveals a creature with a surprising blend of modern and primitive features, including human-like hands and feet paired with a much smaller brain capacity.
The discovery of this large assemblage of fossils provides a rare look at a unique evolutionary mosaic. While the species possessed human-like limbs and wrists, its small brain and primitive torso more closely resemble much older australopiths. The study is based on the analysis of skeletal elements found within the Rising Star cave system.
Why it matters: This discovery adds a complex new branch to the known tree of human evolution.
