From cleaning bus wheels with diesel to winning an Emmy Award
In short: Before he was a staple of prestige television, Richard Schiff lived a life of grit. Between manual labor jobs in New York City and studying acting, he navigated a path from bus terminals to the heights of Hollywood stardom.
Born in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1955, Richard Schiff’s early career was defined by intense physical labor. Before finding success on screen, he worked as a Teamster, cleaning grease from bus wheels using diesel fuel at a Manhattan Greyhound terminal. His varied blue-collar background also included laying cable for Manhattan Cable Television.
Schiff's academic journey was equally unconventional. While he briefly attended the Bronx High School of Science, he did not graduate from that institution. Instead, he balanced work and education by attending night classes at Washington Irving High School. He eventually earned his degree from the City College of New York in 1983, following a period where he had moved to Colorado.
His rise to fame is most closely linked to his transformative performance as Toby Ziegler on The West Wing, a role that earned him an Emmy Award. This breakthrough followed earlier work in films like The Lost World: Jurassic Park, a project that caught the eye of Steven Spielberg. Beyond television, Schiff has expanded his repertoire into video games, providing the performance capture for the character Odin in the 2022 title God of War Ragnarök.
Throughout his career, Schiff has maintained a reputation for an intense, reclusive approach to acting and a low-key delivery style. His filmography spans from small roles in classics like Se7en to leading parts in medical dramas like The Good Doctor, where he played Dr. Aaron Glassman from 2017 to 2024.
