In short: Before becoming a head coach, Ricky Rahne built a reputation as a versatile mentor across several major college football programs. From his time as a record-setting quarterback in Colorado to his strategic roles at Penn State and Vanderbilt, Rahne has consistently shaped the careers of high-performing athletes at every position.

Born in 1980 in Morrison, Colorado, Ricky Rahne first made his mark as a high school quarterback at Bear Creek High School in Lakewood. During his senior year, he led all Colorado quarterbacks with 3,114 passing yards and 33 touchdowns. He continued his playing career at Cornell University, where he served as a three-year starting quarterback from 1999 to 2001.

Rahne transitioned into coaching in 2004 at Holy Cross. His career path took him through Kansas State, where he worked under Bill Snyder, and Vanderbilt, where he mentored quarterback Jordan Rodgers. At Vanderbilt, Rodgers completed 60 percent of his passes during the 2012 season, eventually signing a free agent deal with the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars. Rahne later followed James Franklin to Penn State, where he coached Christian Hackenberg to break all major career passing records for the Nittany Lions.

During his tenure at Penn State, Rahne demonstrated adaptability by coaching both quarterbacks and tight ends. He mentored Mackey Award finalist Mike Gesicki, who set multiple school records for receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns by a tight end. In 2017, Rahne was named offensive coordinator. Under his guidance in 2018, the team achieved its best rushing production in a decade, averaging 204.9 yards per game. Several players he coached, including Miles Sanders and Trace McSorley, were selected in the 2019 NFL Draft.

In December 2019, Rahne was appointed head football coach at Old Dominion University. His start was marked by the unique challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the cancellation of the university's 2020 football season. Despite these early hurdles, his career reflects a steady progression through various offensive roles, emphasizing player development and strategic game planning across different collegiate environments.
