In short: The RIM-174 Standard ERAM, or SM-6, is a multi-mission powerhouse for the U.S. Navy. Beyond its primary role in anti-air warfare, this adaptable missile can strike surface targets, intercept ballistic missiles in their terminal phase, and even launch from the air as the long-range AIM-174B.

Developed by Raytheon, the SM-6 represents a significant evolution in naval defense. It integrates the airframe of the earlier SM-2ER Block IV with an active radar seeker derived from the AIM-120C AMRAAM. This configuration allows the missile to engage agile targets beyond the range of a ship's own illumination radars. By utilizing Cooperative Engagement Capability, the SM-6 can perform over-the-horizon shots, receiving targeting data from other platforms to defend a much larger area than a single ship could manage alone.

The missile's versatility is its defining trait. While it excels at anti-air warfare, it is also capable of terminal ballistic missile defense, supplementing the midcourse capabilities of the SM-3. In combat, the SM-6 has proven its worth, notably intercepting anti-ship ballistic missiles in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Its dual-mode seeker allows it to discriminate targets effectively, even identifying cruise missiles hidden by ground clutter or terrain. This capability has led to its adoption by the U.S. Army for land-based strategic fires and interest from international partners like the German Navy.

Continuous development ensures the platform remains relevant against emerging threats. The upcoming Block IB variant features a larger 21-inch motor, designed to achieve hypersonic speeds and extend the missile's reach. Furthermore, the introduction of the air-launched AIM-174B variant marks the first dedicated long-range air-to-air missile for the Navy since the retirement of the AIM-54 Phoenix in 2004. As testing continues against advanced hypersonic targets, the SM-6 remains a cornerstone of modern integrated air and missile defense strategies.
