How a high-stakes twist redefined the search for a drag icon
In short: In the third season of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, the stakes shifted from survival to legacy. Instead of fighting to stay in the competition, the top performers battled for the power to decide who would be eliminated, fundamentally altering the path to the Drag Race Hall of Fame.
Premiering on January 25, 2018, All Stars season 3 featured ten contestants selected from the show's first nine seasons. The competition introduced a significant departure from the standard format: rather than the two lowest-scoring queens engaging in a 'Lip-Sync for Your Life' to avoid elimination, the two highest-scoring queens competed in a 'Lip-Sync for Your Legacy.' The winner of this performance earned a $10,000 tip and, crucially, the power to choose which bottom queen would be eliminated.
The path to the finale involved a complex voting mechanism. During the finale, previously eliminated queens returned to act as a jury. Each juror was granted two votes to determine the final two contestants from the remaining top four: their first vote was worth two points, while their second was worth only one point. This allowed the former contestants to have a direct hand in deciding the finalists after the contestants had the opportunity to plead their cases.
Despite its ratings success, the season received mixed critical reception. While some critics praised the series as one of the best reality competition shows on television, others were less impressed. Vulture described the season as one of the show's roughest, comparing it to an 'embarrassing cousin,' while The A.V. Club left viewers feeling 'underwhelmed' by the outcome. Ultimately, Trixie Mattel was crowned the winner, with Kennedy Davenport finishing as the runner-up.
The production of the season was not without legal drama. During February 2018, World of Wonder initiated legal action against a person leaking content under the name 'RealityTVLeaks.' This litigation claimed the individual shared plot points, including queen eliminations and runway motifs, across sites like Twitter and Reddit. World of Wonder sought $300,000 in damages, including $150,000 for each infringed episode.
