In short: When RuPaul's Drag Race UK launched in 2019, it did more than just expand the brand. Critics claimed the first series actually saved the franchise from a period of declining reception, delivering a roaring success that resonated from London to the US charts.

The inaugural series of RuPaul's Drag Race UK premiered on 3 October 2019, broadcasting across eight episodes via BBC Three and the WOW Presents Plus streaming service. The competition saw The Vivienne crowned as the winner, with Divina de Campo finishing as the runner-up. The fifth episode's single, "Break Up (Bye Bye)", highlighted the show's cultural reach, hitting number 35 in the UK Singles Chart and number 44 on the US Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

Critical reception was largely positive, though opinions varied on the show's execution. The Guardian suggested the UK iteration "saved RuPaul's Drag Race" following a period of less than positive reception for recent seasons. While iNews awarded the series a five-star rating and called it a "roaring success," they noted the omission of a stand-up comedy challenge. Conversely, Vulture offered a more tempered view, suggesting that while the season reached "true highs," it could not fully insulate the franchise from its "worst impulses."

The series also featured various guest appearances, including singer and television personality Cheryl, as well as ballroom dancers AJ Pritchard and Curtis Pritchard. Other notable figures present included Raven, a runner-up from both Season 2 and All Stars 1, and Katya, a contestant from Season 7 and runner-up of All Stars 2. Sadly, the show's victor, The Vivienne, died from cardiac arrest on 3 January 2025 at age 32.
