How a pandemic-delayed competition redefined British drag culture
In short: RuPaul's Drag Race UK series 2 faced unprecedented delays due to global lockdowns. Despite production being suspended in mid-2020, the competition returned to screens in early 2021, delivering a standout season that even achieved success on the official music charts.
The second installment of the British iteration of the franchise underwent a turbulent production cycle. While casting was finalized as early as 15 November 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic forced a suspension of filming during mid-2020. Production only resumed late in that year, leading to the announcement of a twelve-queen cast on 16 December 2020. The series finally premiered on 14 January 2021 via BBC iPlayer and WOW Presents Plus.
The competition saw Lawrence Chaney crowned as the winner, outperforming runners-up Bimini Bon-Boulash and Tayce. The season's cultural footprint extended beyond television; for instance, the 'United Kingdolls' version of 'UK Hun?'—featured in episode five—ascended to number 27 on the Official UK Charts. To capture the unique atmosphere of the era, a special episode titled 'Queens on Lockdown' was released on 12 February, documenting the contestants during the first lockdown.
The series also featured a variety of notable guests and returning figures. While some appeared only as guests rather than judges, others had established histories with the franchise. This included The Vivienne, who took the title in the first series, and Baga Chipz, a previous contestant. Additionally, Raven appeared, a performer who had previously placed as runner-up in both the second US season and the first All Stars installment. The production also saw the tragic loss of contestant Cherry Valentine, who died at age 28 on 18 September 2022; a 2023 inquest later ruled the cause of death as suicide.
