In short: When the sixteenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race premiered in early 2024, it brought more than just new talent to MTV. It delivered a series of firsts, from a groundbreaking winner to a unique secondary competition that gave eliminated queens a second chance at glory.

Fourteen drag queens competed for a $200,000 reward and the 'America's Next Drag Superstar' crown in the sixteenth season, which began on January 5, 2024. The season was marked by significant milestones in the show's history, most notably the victory of Nymphia Wind, who became the first East Asian winner in the franchise's history. The competition was broadcast on MTV in the United States. This installment followed the renewal of the franchise announced in late 2023.

The competition structure for this season included a unique element known as the LaLaPaRuZa Lip-Sync Smackdown. This secondary competition allowed eliminated contestants to compete before the grand finale. After securing fifth place in the primary tournament, Morphine Love Dion triumphed in the smackdown to claim the Queen of She Done Already Done Had Herses title. The smackdown occurred specifically before the season finale. This provided a distinct path for those previously eliminated from the main stage.

Beyond the main winner, the season saw unprecedented ties in the fan-favorite awards. The Miss Congeniality title was shared between two contestants, Sapphira Cristál—who also served as the season's runner-up—and Xunami Muse. This season followed the momentum of the previous year, as both the main series and its companion, RuPaul's Drag Race: Untucked, were officially renewed for MTV in August 2023.

The transition into the new season was facilitated by the previous season's winner, Sasha Colby, who introduced the contestants via the series' YouTube channel on December 6, 2023. This introduction included an eight-minute preview of the premiere, showcasing the arrival of the fourteen contestants into the Werk Room set.
