Samrat Choudhary: The First BJP Politician to Lead the State of Bihar
In short: Born into a political dynasty, Samrat Choudhary has navigated decades of shifting party loyalties to become Bihar's 24th Chief Minister. From early controversies over his age to his current role as a combative, reform-minded leader, his rise marks a significant shift in the political landscape of this major Indian state.
Born in 1968, Samrat Choudhary is the son of Bihari politicians Parvati Devi and Shakuni Choudhary. His career began in the 1990s with the Samata Party, followed by stints in the Rashtriya Janata Dal and Janata Dal (United) before he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2017. This history of party-hopping has frequently drawn criticism from his political opponents, who view his trajectory as evidence of shifting loyalties. His rise within the BJP was marked by his role as an OBC face for the party, specifically targeting the Koeri or Kushwaha caste, which represents a significant voting bloc in Bihar.
Choudhary’s career has been punctuated by controversy, most notably regarding his age. In 1999, he resigned as a minister in the Rabri Devi government following allegations that he was underage for the position. Later, in 2003, a legal challenge by Sushil Kumar Modi resulted in his election to the legislative assembly being declared void due to similar age-related eligibility concerns. More recently, in 2025, political strategist Prashant Kishor alleged that Choudhary misrepresented his age to the Supreme Court regarding a 1995 murder case, though these claims remain contested.
As Chief Minister since April 2026, Choudhary has adopted a combative leadership style, often drawing comparisons to the governance model of Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Adityanath. His administration has focused on strict law and order, including the use of bulldozers against illegal structures, the deployment of 'Anti-Romeo' squads, and the establishment of fast-track courts. Beyond security, his government has launched ambitious economic and social initiatives, such as a satellite township program, digital property registration for seniors, and a new framework for rural local bodies to collect their own taxes, aiming to raise the state's internal revenue to 1 lakh crore by 2028.
