In short: In 1990, the San Jose Sharks were born from a high-stakes NHL compromise. While their early years were defined by record-breaking losing streaks, the franchise transformed from a struggling expansion team into a global merchandise phenomenon and a perennial playoff contender.

The Sharks' origins lie in a complex 1990 deal between the NHL and owners Gordon and George Gund III. To bring hockey back to the Bay Area—the first time since the 1976 departure of the California Golden Seals—the Gunds purchased an expansion franchise for $45 million. This move involved a strategic trade: the Gunds sold their share of the Minnesota North Stars to Howard Baldwin's group in exchange for the new San Jose team, which was permitted to retain certain players from the North Stars roster.

The team's early identity was a study in extremes. The 1992–93 season saw the franchise set an NHL record with 71 losses and a 17-game losing streak. However, their commercial appeal was equally unprecedented. During their inaugural years, the Sharks led the NHL in merchandise sales, generating $150 million—roughly 27% of the entire league's total. At the time, this performance placed them behind only the Chicago Bulls of the NBA in terms of North American sports merchandise dominance.

The franchise eventually found its footing through historic upsets and star acquisitions. In 1993–94, the eighth-seeded Sharks became the first eighth-seed in North American professional sports history to defeat a first-seed, upsetting the Detroit Red Wings. This era of rebuilding paved the way for the arrival of superstars like Joe Thornton, who won the Hart Memorial Trophy in 2006, and Jonathan Cheechoo, who led the league in scoring that same year. From playing at the Cow Palace to their current home, the SAP Center—locally known as the 'Shark Tank'—the team has evolved into a cornerstone of California sports.
