The longest-serving Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and his welfare-driven political rise
In short: From a student union president to a powerful federal minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan has shaped the political landscape of Madhya Pradesh. His career is defined by high-stakes electoral victories and a series of welfare schemes designed to support the state's most vulnerable populations.
Born on 5 March 1959 into a farming family in Jait village, Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s political journey began long before he reached the highest office in Madhya Pradesh. After joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at age 13 in 1972, he participated in the underground movement against the Emergency between 1976 and 1977, which led to his imprisonment in Bhopal Jail.
Chouhan climbed the BJP hierarchy through various positions, such as leading the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha as National President between 2000 and 2002, and acting as BJP Vice President from 2019 until 2020. His legislative career includes multiple terms in the Lok Sabha, representing the Vidisha constituency, and several terms in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Budhni.
As Chief Minister, Chouhan has become the longest-serving leader in the state's history. His tenure has been marked by periods of significant influence, including his first term starting in 2005 and a subsequent term beginning in March 2020 following the collapse of the Kamal Nath government. His political success is often linked to welfare initiatives, such as providing rice at ₹1 per kg, the Sambal maternity assistance scheme, and the Ladli Laxmi Yojana.
Moving into national politics in 2024, Chouhan took office as the 23rd Minister of Rural Development and the 32nd Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare. His ability to secure electoral victories in 2008, 2013, and 2023 has been credited to these targeted social welfare programs.
