Did a Houston Rapper Really Invent the Modern Meaning of Drip?
In short: Albert Walker Mondane, better known as Sauce Walka, claims he is the architect behind the ubiquitous hip-hop slang term drip. While the word has become a global fashion staple, its roots in Houston rap culture remain a point of pride for the artist who built his career on the aesthetic.
Born in 1990, Sauce Walka began his musical journey in 2007 under the moniker A-Walk as a member of the Houston group Mostheard. By 2014, he had rebranded and launched his own independent label, The Sauce Factory, which has served as a platform for artists like Sancho Saucy and Peso Peso. His rise to prominence was marked by a 2015 diss track aimed at Drake, in which he accused the superstar of appropriating the specific cultural nuances of the Houston hip-hop scene.
Central to his public persona is the term drip, a slang word he frequently incorporates into his lyrics and credits himself with popularizing in its modern context. This focus on style and identity has defined his career, even as his life has been punctuated by legal and personal turbulence. In 2018, Texas court documents labeled his record label a documented gang, an accusation he has consistently denied, maintaining that his organization is strictly a business entity focused on music and artistry.
His history with law enforcement is extensive. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to deadly conduct following a shooting at a concert hosted by Trae tha Truth, and in 2023, he was arrested after a high-speed chase through Houston that reached speeds exceeding 130 mph. More recently, in 2025, he was injured in a shooting that claimed the life of his label artist, Sayso P. Despite these challenges, he has remained a visible figure in the industry, even publicly supporting Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
