In short: Scott Turner spent eight seasons as an NFL defensive back before transitioning into a multifaceted career in Texas state politics and federal administration. Now serving as the 19th U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, his journey reflects a unique blend of athletic discipline, legislative experience, and private sector leadership.

Born in 1972, Scott Turner grew up in the Dallas area and excelled as a multi-sport athlete. After playing football and running track at the University of Illinois, he entered the NFL in 1995. Over an eight-year professional career, he played for the Washington Redskins, the San Diego Chargers, and briefly the Denver Broncos, appearing in 101 games. A leg injury during a 2004 training camp ultimately forced his retirement from professional football.

Turner's political trajectory began with an internship in the office of U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter. After an unsuccessful 2006 congressional bid in California, he returned to Texas, where he served in the state legislature from 2013 to 2017. During this time, he notably challenged Joe Straus for the position of Speaker of the Texas House, marking the first recorded vote for the role since 1976. His later work included leading the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council during the first Trump administration, where he focused on economic development in distressed regions.

In February 2025, Turner was sworn in as the 19th Secretary of Housing and Urban Development following a 55–44 Senate confirmation vote. His tenure has been marked by administrative shifts, including the relocation of the department's headquarters to Alexandria, Virginia, and a mandate to restrict the agency's digital services to English only. Beyond his public service, Turner has maintained roles in the private sector, including positions at a content management software firm and a national multifamily real estate developer, while also serving as an associate pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church.
