From NFL draft bust to Congressional victory in the Blue Ridge Mountains
In short: Heath Shuler was once labeled one of the biggest NFL draft busts in history. Yet, the former Tennessee quarterback managed a rare political feat: defeating a Republican incumbent in the South to help flip the U.S. House of Representatives.
Shuler's journey began as a standout at the University of Tennessee, where he was named the 1993 SEC Player of the Year. His collegiate success led to him being selected third overall in the 1994 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins. However, his professional career struggled to match his college dominance. After three seasons in Washington, he was traded to the New Orleans Saints, where a serious foot injury required two surgeries and effectively stalled his momentum. By 2004, ESPN had ranked him as one of the top 17 sports flops of the previous 25 years.
Transitioning from sports to politics, Shuler launched a campaign in 2006 for North Carolina's 11th congressional district. Running as a Democrat, he successfully defeated Republican incumbent Charles H. Taylor, winning 54 percent of the vote. This victory was significant, as Shuler was one of only two Democrats to unseat an incumbent in the South that year, contributing to a Democratic majority in the House.
While in Washington, Shuler joined the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate-to-conservative Democrats, as a leading figure. He was known for challenging party leadership, including a 2010 run against Nancy Pelosi for Democratic leader. His political career ended in 2013 after the Republican-dominated General Assembly redrew the 11th district, shifting it from a Democratic-leaning area to one that was heavily Republican. Shuler noted that such precise redistricting makes it nearly impossible for moderates to remain in office.
