The Shiba Inu is a prehistoric hunting dog that conquered the modern internet
In short: Small, agile, and famously stubborn, the Shiba Inu is Japan's oldest native dog breed. Once nearly wiped out by war and disease, these independent spirits have evolved from mountain hunters into global digital icons, starring in viral memes and inspiring cryptocurrencies while maintaining their reputation as highly intelligent, spirited companions.
The Shiba Inu is a basal breed, with ancestors depicted in prehistoric Japanese dogū figurines. Originally bred in the mountainous Chūbu region to flush out birds and rabbits, the breed nearly vanished during the early 20th century as imported western dogs gained popularity. By the 1920s, purebreds were scarce, prompting a preservation movement that was later devastated by World War II food shortages and distemper outbreaks in the 1950s and 60s. Modern Shibas descend from only three surviving bloodlines: the Shinshu, Mino, and San'in strains.
Today, the breed is recognized for its double coat and distinct urajiro markings—a white underside required on specific body parts. While they are prized for their spirited boldness and intelligence, they are also known for high reactivity and a tendency toward independence. This complexity makes early socialization essential. Experts note that their behavior may be linked to a closer genetic relationship to wolves than many other domesticated breeds, which can manifest in the infamous 'shiba scream' if the dog lacks sufficient stimulation.
Beyond their physical traits, Shibas have achieved a unique status in digital culture. Since at least 2010, they have maintained a significant online presence, most notably through the 2013 'Doge' meme featuring a dog named Kabosu, which subsequently inspired the creation of Dogecoin. Despite their internet fame, they remain a serious breed with specific health considerations, including a predisposition to patella luxation, glaucoma, and canine atopic dermatitis. Nevertheless, they are exceptionally long-lived; a 2024 UK study recorded an average life expectancy of 14.6 years, significantly higher than the 12.7-year average for other purebreds.
