How a 19th-century Japanese pharmacy transformed into a global beauty empire
In short: Founded in 1872 by a former Navy pharmacist, Shiseido began not with makeup, but with a simple pharmacy. Through strategic shifts in advertising, technological acquisitions, and navigating wartime austerity, this Tokyo-based giant evolved from selling hair tonics to becoming the fifth largest cosmetic company in the world.
The company’s origins lie in the work of Arinobu Fukuhara, who established the Shiseido Pharmacy in Tokyo. After traveling through Europe and the United States, Fukuhara introduced a soda fountain to his store, a move that eventually birthed the Shiseido Parlor and helped introduce ice cream to Japan. His son, Shinzō Fukuhara, took the helm in 1913, bringing a Western-inspired focus on sophisticated advertising and design that would define the brand's aesthetic for decades.
Shiseido’s history is marked by its ability to pivot during cultural shifts. In 1917, the company moved away from traditional Japanese beauty imagery toward Western ideals, featuring Art Nouveau-style scripts and contemporary hairstyles. During the Second World War, when luxury consumption was restricted by Japanese ordinances, Shise\'tido pivoted its marketing to emphasize the utilitarian health benefits of products, such as toothpaste for gum health, while maintaining a prestigious brand image. This period also saw the temporary cessation of their high-end 'De Luxe' brand, which was later relaunched in 1951.
Today, Shiseido is a massive multinational, trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange as part of the Nikkei 225. The company continues to innovate through technology, acquiring firms like MATCHCo and Giaran to integrate AI and augmented reality for skin analysis and beauty simulations. However, the brand also faces modern complexities, such as the 2023 decline in Chinese demand following the controversial release of treated wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi reactor, which triggered consumer boycotts of Japanese cosmetics.
