In short: What counts as short hair depends entirely on where you live and when you were born. While we often view short hair as a modern convenience, its meaning fluctuates between gendered norms, colonial influence, and the changing tides of global fashion.

The definition of 'short' is far from universal. In more traditional societies—including parts of the Islamic world, Asia, and Eastern Europe—a woman's hair is considered short if it is anything shorter than chest length. In these contexts, hair reaching the elbow is categorized as medium-length. Conversely, in progressive societies with less rigid gender norms, the classic bob is viewed as medium, while 'short' refers to more extreme styles like the pixie cut.

For men, the standard has also shifted. While long hair and wigs were fashionable in 18th-century Europe, ancient Sparta, and during the 1960s through the 1980s, short hair is now the general norm in European-settled areas. In East Asian Sinosphere cultures, the tradition was to grow hair long and untrimmed, often tied up. Significant changes occurred only with the rise of European colonial empires and the Republic of China, which helped popularize the short styles we recognize today.

Western fashion for women saw a major revolution in the 1920s with the rise of the bob, the shingle bob, and the short crop. While short hair was previously associated with Coney Island chorus girls, dancer Irene Castle brought the style into the mainstream during the 1910s. Although the bob fell out of fashion by 1932, the pixie cut saw a massive resurgence in 1953, thanks to Audrey Hepburn's performance in Roman Holiday. Since the 1990s, short hair has remained a persistent trend, even seeing a period where teenagers of all genders adopted similar, shorter cuts.
