What if your next life was a short-lived goblin?
In short: In the manga series So What's Wrong with Getting Reborn as a Goblin?, a 29-year-old salaryman named Akira Yagami survives a fatal traffic accident only to find himself reincarnated as a goblin. While most goblins in this new world live only about seven days, Akira's tragic end grants him an unusually long lifespan.
Illustrated by Tsukasa Araki and written by Nazuna Miki, the series launched on Shueisha's Tonari no Young Jump platform on 26 February 2020. The plot centres on Akira Yagami, an IT specialist who perishes whilst rescuing a child from a truck. Upon his reincarnation, he discovers that his regrets regarding his early death have granted him a unique skill: an unusually long lifespan of 80 years, far exceeding the typical seven-day lifespan of his new species. The story was first published through Shueisha's digital service. This reincarnation journey began after he saved a boy from being hit by a vehicle.
This biological anomaly serves as a central mechanic for the character's development. Due to his prolonged lifespan, Akira can acquire abilities from deceased goblins. This ability distinguishes him from the rest of the goblin population, even as the world he inhabits faces a potential new threat following the death of the Demon Lord. This unique trait allows him to inherit skills from other goblins who have passed away. His presence in this world coincides with the demise of the Demon Lord.
The manga has been compiled into 15 volumes as of September 17, 2026. An anime television series adaptation, produced by Bakkka and directed by Ryūta Kawahara, premiered on October 5, 2026. While critics like Rebecca Silverman have noted that the series follows standard isekai and fantasy tropes, they have praised its ability to flesh out its premise and its character designs. The English licence is held by Yen Press. For streaming, the series is available on Crunchyroll and Ani-One Asia.
