How a fatal Las Vegas altercation reshaped a rock band's identity
In short: In 2008, Escape the Fate faced a crisis that went far beyond musical differences. After a high-profile legal battle involving their original frontman, the Nevada-born group had to navigate a complete lineup overhaul, a major label transition, and a fight to maintain their creative soul.
Formed in 2/2004 in Pahrump, Nevada, Escape the Fate's early years were defined by the presence of vocalist Ronnie Radke. While the band achieved early success—including winning a local radio contest judged by My Chemical Romance in 2005—their trajectory was permanently altered by a 2006 incident. An incident in Las Vegas involving Radke led to the death of 18-year-old Michael Cook. Although Radke was not the shooter, he faced battery charges and was later sentenced to two years in prison after failing to report to probation officers in June 2008.
This legal turmoil led to Radke's dismissal in mid-2008, forcing the band to find a replacement. They turned to Craig Mabbitt, formerly of Blessthefall. This transition marked a significant shift in both personnel and commercial reach. In October 2008, the group's sophomore record, This War Is Ours, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 35, with 13,000 units sold during its opening seven days. By 2010, the band had moved from Epitaph Records to the major label DGC/Interscope, seeking a wider audience.
The band's evolution was not without further instability. Bassist Max Green departed the group following struggles with drug addiction, which led the band to forfeit a scheduled tour with Bullet for My Valentine and Black Tide in 2010. During this era, the band focused on musical diversity, producing their self-titled 2010 album with producer Don Gilmore. Despite the revolving door of members, drummer Robert Ortiz remains the only founding member still in the lineup, anchoring a legacy of survival through significant internal upheaval.
