How South Korean star Taemin redefined the boundaries of K-pop performance and gender expression
In short: Known as the Idol's Idol, Taemin transformed from a teenage boy band member into a solo powerhouse. By blending contemporary dance with androgynous aesthetics, he pioneered a genderless performance style that challenged industry norms, turning his viral choreography into a cultural phenomenon that resonates far beyond the traditional K-pop landscape.
Born in Seoul in 1993, Lee Tae-min debuted at age 14 with the group Shinee in 2008. While he initially gained fame as a group member, his 2014 solo debut with the EP Ace marked the beginning of a distinct artistic evolution. Taemin’s work is characterized by a shift toward darker, more sensual themes, blending pop and R&B with influences ranging from rock to trap. His music often explores complex concepts like philosophy and faith, frequently accompanied by choreography-heavy music videos.
The 2017 release of his studio album Move served as a pivotal moment in his career. The title track’s choreography, created with Japanese collaborator Koharu Sugawara, sparked a viral trend in South Korea known as Move Disease. Taemin intentionally sought a middle ground in his performance, merging masculine and feminine movements to create a concept that felt edgy and powerful. This approach established him as a pioneer of the genderless performance trend among male K-pop idols, encouraging audiences to appreciate his work regardless of traditional gender expectations.
Taemin’s career has been marked by significant milestones, including becoming the first artist to headline a concert at South Korea’s Inspire Arena in 2023 and the first male Korean soloist to take the stage at the Coachella music festival in 2026. Despite facing challenges, including a transition to public service work during his mandatory military enlistment due to health concerns, he has maintained a prolific output. His discography continues to expand, with recent projects like Phase 1: Soft Violence reflecting his ongoing commitment to artistic experimentation and his status as a highly influential figure in the global music industry.
