How a pub quiz became a British end-of-year ritual
In short: Every December, three celebrity teams face off in a high-stakes comedy battle to recap the year's biggest moments. Hosted by Jimmy Carr, this Channel 4 staple turns news, pop culture, and even schoolyard performances into a frantic, hilarious game of wits.
Since its debut on 27 December 2004, The Big Fat Quiz of the Year has become a cornerstone of British television. The format is deceptively simple: three teams of two celebrities—predominantly comedians—compete in a comedy panel game styled after a pub quiz. Using electronic boards to record their answers, they tackle various categories to see who best captured the zeitgeist of the preceding twelve months.
The show has maintained a remarkable consistency, with comedian Jimmy Carr serving as the host and quizmaster for every single edition. While the main series typically airs in late December, the show has occasionally shifted to early January, as seen in 2010 and 2011. The program has also expanded into special editions, including decade-themed specials in 2012 and 2013 to celebrate Channel 4's 30th anniversary, and a 10th-anniversary special in January 2015.
Beyond the celebrity banter, the show is known for its unique segments. Neasden's Mitchell Brook Primary School pupils provided a recurring highlight by dramatising major news events, from the Momart blaze to Larry the Cat's arrival at 10 Downing Street. The show has also featured 'mystery guests' and guest questioners ranging from pop stars like Katy Perry to news anchors like Jon Snow, who provides satirical news reports. While most regulars like Richard Ayoade and Jonathan Ross have appeared frequently, the show's ability to evolve while keeping Carr as its sole constant fixture has secured its place in the annual cultural calendar.
