How a British ceramics competition transformed from BBC Two to Channel 4
In short: What began in 2015 as a niche pottery competition at Middleport Pottery has evolved into a global television phenomenon. From shifting judges to changing networks, discover the complex journey of a show that tests both creative skill and technical endurance.
The Great Pottery Throw Down debuted on BBC Two on 3 November 2015, featuring judges Keith Brymer Jones and Kate Malone, with Sara Cox as host. The competition, held at Middleport Pottery, follows amateur potters through two distinct stages: a 'second challenge' testing specific skills and a 'main make' involving a multi-stage creative process of designing, building, and decorating clay bodies. Each episode concludes with the designation of a 'potter of the week' and the elimination of the lowest-performing contestant. The competition's second series concluded on 23 March 2017. In some instances, judges have even declined to eliminate any contestants during a week due to disagreements.
The show's production history is marked by significant transitions. After its initial run, the series moved to More4 in early 2020, introducing ceramic designer Sue Pryke as a judge and Melanie Sykes as host. By 2021, the program migrated to Channel 4, relocating the competition to the Gladstone Pottery Museum. This era saw Richard Miller transition from kiln technician to judge, alongside Keith Brymer Jones, with Siobhán McSweeney taking over hosting duties. The fifth series featured Ellie Taylor as a co-host and included Rose Schmits working as a technician. During this period, the judging panel consisted of Keith Brymer Jones and Richard Miller.
The series has also faced unexpected disruptions and expansions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, filming was halted for seven days, leading judges to waive eliminations to ensure crew safety. The franchise has since expanded to include the 'Festive Pottery Throwdown' for celebrities and a Canadian version on CBC Television. While the show gained international reach through HBO Max in the United States, the platform's availability of later seasons has remained inconsistent. The Canadian spin-off debuted on 8 February 2024. Additionally, a celebrity-focused Christmas special exists under the title Festive Pottery Throwdown.
