In short: Formed in 1989, The Gathering evolved from atmospheric doom metal into a genre-defying force. Their name, chosen by teenage founders, traces back to the 1986 film Highlander. Beyond their cinematic moniker, the band is defined by a restless creative spirit that has seen them navigate multiple vocalists and stylistic shifts.

The Gathering was established in Oss, North Brabant, in 1989 by brothers Hans and René Rutten alongside vocalist Bart Smits. The band's name was inspired by the 1986 film Highlander, which featured a plot point about a gathering of immortals. The founders, then aged 15 to 17, found the concept fitting for a group of musicians coming together to create art. Their early sound was rooted in atmospheric doom metal, influenced by extreme acts like Celtic Frost and Hellhammer, and they gained initial traction through demos like 1990's An Imaginary Symphony.

The band's trajectory shifted dramatically with the 1995 release of Mandylion, their first album featuring vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen. This breakthrough sold over 130,000 copies in Europe and moved the group toward a more melodic, atmospheric sound. By 1998, with the double album How to Measure a Planet?, they fully embraced influences from shoegaze and trip hop. This period of experimentation led them to form their own label, Psychonaut Records, in 1999 to secure creative control over their distribution and marketing.

The Gathering has navigated numerous lineup changes, including the departure of van Giersbergen in 2007 and the subsequent tenure of Norwegian singer Silje Wergeland, who joined in 2009 and departed in 2025. Despite these transitions, the band has maintained a dedicated following, marked by milestones like their 25th-anniversary reunion concert in 2014 and the 2022 release of their eleventh studio album, Beautiful Distortion. Their history remains a testament to the band's ability to reinvent itself while remaining anchored to its original, collaborative ethos.
