Can a collective urban legend physically manifest to attack the innocent?
In short: In the Tokyo suburb of Musashino, a mysterious assailant known as Lil' Slugger is terrorizing the streets. Clad in golden inline skates and wielding a bent baseball bat, this figure targets those pushed to their psychological limits, leaving behind a trail of victims and a city gripped by escalating paranoia.
Directed by Satoshi Kon and produced by Madhouse, the series explores a social phenomenon where a juvenile attacker, often called Shōnen Batto or 'Boy with Bat,' strikes individuals under extreme mental pressure. The investigation is led by detectives Keiichi Ikari and Mitsuhiro Maniwa. While Ikari is a skeptic who refuses to believe in the supernatural, his partner Maniwa becomes increasingly obsessed with the stranger elements of the case, nearly losing his sanity in the process.
The mystery of the attacker's identity is deeply intertwined with the life of Tsukiko Sagi, a character designer famous for the pink puppy Maromi. Though she is initially identified as the first victim of the attacks, the truth is far more complex. It is eventually revealed that the entity is not human, but a manifestation of Tsukiko's own subconscious. Years earlier, after her pet dog was killed by a car, she fabricated a story about a boy on roller blades to spare her father the grief. This childhood lie, fueled by the power of rumor and speculation, eventually coalesced into the elusive, physical entity of Lil' Slugger.
The series features a wide cast of characters, many of whom are identified by animal-themed names, such as 'sagi' (heron) and 'chō' (butterfly). The victims include a variety of individuals, from a narcissistic student named Shōgo Ushiyama to a journalist and even a corrupt police chief. As the phenomenon spreads, the line between reality and delusion blurs, showing how collective fear can give life to a shared nightmare.
