In short: Formed in 1968 by former Byrds members Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, the Flying Burrito Brothers pioneered a unique blend of country, soul, and psychedelic rock. Despite their massive influence and revolving door of personnel, the band has survived through decades of turmoil, name changes, and shifting musical trends.

The band's 1969 debut, The Gilded Palace of Sin, is widely considered a landmark in country rock, though it initially stalled at No. 164 on the Billboard charts. The group was defined by the volatile partnership between Parsons and Hillman, whose creative differences—compounded by Parsons' hedonistic lifestyle and erratic behavior—led to his firing in 1970. Parsons, who famously declared, 'You can't fire me, I'm Gram!', left behind a legacy that would eventually eclipse the band's own commercial success.

Following Parsons' departure, the band underwent numerous incarnations, struggling with debt and inconsistent commercial performance. While early lineups featured legendary musicians like pedal steel guitarist 'Sneaky' Pete Kleinow and future Eagle Bernie Leadon, the group's identity became increasingly fluid. By the 1980s, they rebranded as the 'Burrito Brothers' to pursue a more radio-friendly country sound, eventually achieving Top 20 hits and winning a Billboard award for 'Best New Crossover Group' in 1981.

The band's history is a testament to endurance, with various members keeping the name alive long after the original founders moved on. Kleinow, who also worked on the special effects for Gumby and The Empire Strikes Back, remained a key figure until his health declined in the mid-2000s. Today, the group continues to record and tour, maintaining a lineage that stretches back over half a century, proving that the idea behind the band was, as Parsons once suggested, something that would keep going.
