How a hero's reward turned into a desolate, empty wasteland
In short: After distinguishing himself in battle, an orphan hero is granted a territory by the king. But there is a catch: the land is remote, completely uninhabited, and lacks even basic food supplies. This is the starting point for the Japanese light novel series The Frontier Lord Begins with Zero Subjects.
The series, written by Fuurou and illustrated by Kinta, follows the journey of a hero named Dias. Despite his status as an orphan, Dias earned acclaim for his prowess in combat, leading the king to grant him his own territory. However, the reward proved to be a massive challenge; the land he received was remote and entirely devoid of inhabitants or food resources. His survival and management of the territory begin when he encounters Alna, a girl with a blue horn on her forehead, who guides him to a village of her people.
The story's origins trace back to January 20, 2018, when it first appeared as a web novel on the user-generated platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Its popularity led to a formal publishing deal with Earth Star Entertainment under the Earth Star Novel imprint on October 16, 2018. The franchise has since expanded significantly, including a manga adaptation illustrated by Yumbo that began serialization on December 25, 2018, and an anime television series produced by studio42.
The anime adaptation, directed by Kenichi Imaizumi, aired between July 10 and September 25, 2026, on networks including Tokyo MX. Crown Head and Kaya provide the soundtrack for this series, which was revealed at the Earth Star Novel 10th Anniversary Summer Festival on July 19, 2025. As of August 2022, the series has achieved significant commercial success, with over 1 million copies in circulation.
