A suburban move turns deadly in the Netflix hit The Hunting Wives
In short: When Sophie O'Neil relocates to the fictional town of Maple Brook, Texas, she expects a fresh start. Instead, she is pulled into the orbit of Margo Banks and her elite socialite clique. What begins as a glamorous obsession quickly spirals into a dark web of secrets, scandal, and murder.
Based on the novel by May Cobb, the television series The Hunting Wives centers on Sophie, a woman fleeing a troubled past in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she killed a pedestrian while driving under the influence. Seeking anonymity in Texas, she instead finds herself captivated by Margo Banks, the wife of her husband's boss. Margo leads a powerful, exclusive group of local women known as the Hunting Wives, whose influence in the town of Maple Brook is as dangerous as it is alluring.
The narrative tension escalates when a local teenager, Abby, is discovered dead in the woods where the elite group frequently gathers. As the investigation unfolds, led by deputies Walter Flynn and Wanda Salazar, the series explores themes of obsession and moral decay. Malin Akerman, who portrays Margo, revealed that she drew inspiration for her character from Melania Trump, aiming to capture a specific brand of elite detachment. The production itself utilized North Carolina locations, including downtown Mooresville, to recreate the atmosphere of East Texas.
The series has found significant commercial success since its July 21, 2025, premiere on Netflix. During its debut week, it secured the third spot on the platform's English-language TV list with 5.2 million views, while Luminate reported over 2 billion minutes viewed in the United States. Critics have responded positively, with Rotten Tomatoes noting an 81% approval rating and Metacritic assigning a score of 73 out of 100. Following this reception, the show was renewed for a second season, set to premiere on November 26, 2026, with a third season already in development.
