A new era begins as Nigella Lawson joins the Great British Bake Off
In short: After nine years, Prue Leith is stepping down from the judging panel, leaving a void in the kitchen. As series 17 kicks off, the show introduces a major shake-up to its judging lineup and spin-off programming, marking a significant transition for the beloved baking competition.
The seventeenth series of The Great British Bake Off launched on 22 September 2026, following a period of significant transition. After nine years on the judging panel, Prue Leith announced her departure in January 2026, citing a desire to pursue other interests and feeling unsteady while on set. Her replacement is Nigella Lawson, whose arrival was teased in a series trailer released in August 2026. Lawson's entry was preceded by a trailer where the judges competed to taste bakes using forks. This new era was further highlighted by a parody of Doctor Who, where Leith appeared to undergo regeneration into Lawson.
The series maintains its core presenting duo of Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding, but the supporting cast has seen changes. The long-running spin-off, An Extra Slice, has been cancelled. In its place, a new companion program called Second Helpings will air, hosted by Jon Richardson and Judi Love.
The competition's structure remains intense, with themes such as Cake Week, Biscuit Week, and Audience Choice Week. In the first episode, bakers faced a chocolate stout cake challenge with 2.25 hours to complete it, followed by a technical challenge set by Nigella Lawson involving coffee and walnut cake. The season's third week, Audience Choice Week, saw the public decide all challenges, including a unique showstopper requirement to create a bake that is also wearable. During Biscuit Week, contestants had to produce thirty identical American-style cookies. They also faced a technical challenge involving iced gems, which required making twenty-four orange shortbread biscuits with rainbow icing.
The competition also saw early drama in episode one when a baker named Shannon was unable to compete during the showstopper challenge due to illness. To ensure fairness, the judges opted not to eliminate anyone during her absence.
