A new era for the Great British Bake Off begins on Channel 4
In short: In 2017, the beloved baking competition moved from BBC One to Channel 4. This eighth series introduced a fresh judging panel and a new hosting duo, marking a significant transition for the franchise. Despite the change in broadcaster, the show continued to push bakers through increasingly complex technical and showstopper challenges.
The eighth series of The Great British Bake Off premiered on 29 August 2017. The series introduced a new lineup for the judging panel, featuring Prue Leith alongside existing judge Paul Hollywood, and a new hosting duo consisting of Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig. This transition followed the move of production company Love Productions away from the BBC. The new judging lineup featured Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding as the primary hosts.
The competition's intensity was defined by its varied challenges. In the first series, bakers faced a two-hour fruit cake challenge and a technical task to make 12 peppermint cream chocolate mini rolls. As the competition progressed, the tasks grew more intricate, such as the semi-final requirement to produce 24 choux buns—half with craquelin and half with icing—within two and a half hours. The final pushed contestants to their limits with a five-hour showstopper task to create a large entremet with at least five elements. Other complex tasks included making 12 chocolate mini rolls and a biscuit board game. Bakers also had to produce 24 sandwich biscuits during the signature challenge.
The series was not without controversy. On 31 October 2017, judge Prue Leith accidentally revealed the winner, Sophie Faldo, on Twitter twelve hours before the finale aired. While the error caused significant uproar among fans, the series remained a massive television event. The first episode on Channel 4 drew 6.5 million overnight viewers, while the final reached a peak of 8.9 million viewers. The series also included holiday specials featuring returning contestants from previous seasons. These festive episodes were won by Paul Jagger and Rav Bansal respectively.
