In short: The twelfth series of The Great British Bake Off brought high-stakes precision and complex illusions. From anti-gravity cakes to intricate German Prinzregententorte, the bakers faced grueling technical challenges to prove their mastery under the watchful eyes of judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

Airing from 21 September 2021, series 12 pushed the culinary limits of its contestants through increasingly complex tasks. The competition culminated in a victory for Giuseppe Dell'Anno, who made history as the programme's first Italian winner. He was joined by runners-up Chigs Parmar and Crystelle Pereira. The series was hosted by Matt Lucas and Noel Fielding. These contestants competed for several months to secure the title.

The technical challenges required immense precision and time management. Bakers faced diverse tasks, such as creating 12 sandwiched jammy biscuits in 1 hour and 45 minutes or attempting a complex Prinzregententorte—consisting of eight thin layers of genoises sponge—in 2 hours and 45 minutes. The final technical challenge was particularly demanding, requiring the creation of 12 Belgian buns filled with sultanas and lemon curd in just 2 hours and 30 minutes. One task involved making 24 identical brandy snaps within two hours. Another required crafting 15 olive and cheese breadsticks.

The showstopper challenges emphasized artistry and scale, often requiring over four hours of labor. These included creating three-dimensional biscuit replicas of childhood toys, intricate terrine pies, and even a Mad Hatter tea party display for the grand finale. Notwithstanding heavy pressure, the show left a major cultural mark, capturing 61.9% of every young person watching television during its airing. The bakers also produced a decorative caramel tart. They were even tasked with making a three-dimensional themed milk bread display.

Beyond the main competition, the series expanded with festive specials. The Christmas edition featured guests like Olly Alexander and Shaun Dooley, while the New Year special brought back former contestants such as Kim-Joy Hewlett and Hermine Dossou. The festive episodes included guests such as Lydia West and Nathaniel Curtis. The New Year special featured Rowan Williams alongside Jon Jenkins.
