The inaugural season of The Great British Bake Off began in 2010
In short: Before it became a global phenomenon, the first series of The Great British Bake Off focused on ten amateur bakers testing their skills. From technical challenges using Mary Berry's recipes to intense showstoppers, the competition set the stage for a baking dynasty that would eventually change television forever.
The competition featured ten home bakers competing to be named the best amateur baker. In this debut season, the voiceover was provided by Stephen Noonan, a role that would later be assumed by on-screen presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins in subsequent series.
The competition structure involved three weekly challenges: a signature challenge, a technical challenge, and a showstopper. For example, in the first episode, bakers had three hours to create any cake they desired, while the technical challenge required them to make a Victoria Sandwich using a recipe from Mary Berry. The final challenge of that episode required a Chocolate Celebration Cake with original flair.
The season concluded with a final that differed from later iterations. Following the initial bake, two contestants remained to battle for the title after one of the three finalists was knocked out. These two finalists faced a massive task: producing 24 miniature cakes in 2.5 hours, followed by a final showstopper of 24 tarts, 24 scones, 24 choux buns, and 24 bread finger sandwiches for 40 guests. This final-day elimination rule was eventually dropped in later series.
The winner of the first series was Edd Kimber, who has since built a professional career in baking. Kimber, author of three books such as 'The Boy Who Bakes', previously held a position in the pastry department at Le Manoir, Raymond Blanc's restaurant. His experience includes conducting macaron workshops in London and operating a temporary bakery within Fortnum & Mason.
