How a Bravo reality series became a global meme phenomenon
In short: Since its 2010 debut, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills has evolved from a standard reality show into a cultural touchstone. Beyond the high-stakes drama of California's elite, the series has shaped internet culture, spawning award-winning memes and massive spin-offs that expanded the entire franchise.
Launched on Bravo on October 14, 2010, the series was the sixth installment in The Real Housewives franchise. While it initially focused on the personal lives of women like Taylor Armstrong and Kyle Richards, its cultural footprint expanded far beyond its original premise. The show's success was cemented early on when it received the Best Reality Series award at the 2011 Critics Choice Awards.
The series has become a significant driver of digital culture. In 2019, a screenshot from the second season—depicting Taylor Armstrong and Kyle Richards during a 'Malibu Beach Party from Hell' episode—became the viral 'Woman yelling at a cat' meme. This digital moment was so impactful that it earned the title of Meme of the Year at the 2020 Shorty Awards, with Armstrong virtually accepting the honor.
The franchise's reach is further evidenced by its expansion into spin-offs and unexpected cameos. Original cast member Lisa Vanderpump's influence led to the creation of Vanderpump Rules and Vanderpump Dogs. The show's cast members have also crossed into other media, appearing in comedy films like The Hungover Games in 2014 and even featuring in Lady Gaga's 2014 music video for 'G.U.Y.'
As the show entered its fifteenth season in late 2025, the cast continued to shift, introducing figures like Rachel Zoe and Amanda Frances. This constant evolution, marked by a rotating door of housewives and 'friends of the housewives,' has allowed the series to maintain its relevance in the competitive landscape of reality television for over fifteen years.
